Simple style built to last
Set in a new build home that replaced a redundant hay barn on the Hertfordshire Green Belt, the design of this bespoke kitchen had to offer the charm of a homely, classic design but look at home within a contemporary environment
A careful balance of styles
The architecture of this property is one of a kind, so the kitchen to sit within it had to be too.
Although bold in their build design choices, our client wanted the kitchen to offer a simple, timeless feel for the kitchen. Renowned for shaping beautiful spaces to meet every lifestyle need, we knew we could strike the right balance between modern style and traditional craft.
The client asked us to create a kitchen to suit the open-plan living arrangement, highlighting the importance of retaining a light and open indoor-outdoor feeling to ensure that the whole space has a cohesive design with great flow.
Open-plan design
The Original Bakehouse Shaker was chosen for its pared-back but solid construction and for the cabinetry’s ability to achieve a timeless look with an element of charm. The simplicity of the Original Bakehouse Shaker works alongside the contemporary architecture and furniture found throughout the rest of the house.
The ample glazing in the space posed some challenges for the layout of the cabinetry as there was no uninterrupted run, so base units and an island provide plenty of worktop area, while two tall dressers conceal refrigeration and storage for dried goods. A single open shelf then offers an opportunity for decorative display without overcrowding the wall. By creating made-to-measure cabinetry, the property’s architecture and kitchen blend seamlessly.
The working space
With a fondness for entertaining, a large utility room was a must for this client. Located behind glazed sliding internal doors, it had to be the workhorse of the kitchen space housing many of the appliances as well as ample storage to ensure a place for everything. Similar in aesthetic, the utility features custom timber cladding to work alongside the design style found in the primary space.
Allocating a generous footprint to the utility meant that the open-plan room can house elements created to enhance the enjoyment of time spent there. The bespoke banquette installed below the low picture window invites a moment of calm to take in the views of the outdoors.
“The client didn’t want the kitchen to feel too heavy or olde world. In fact, the key was simplistic with traditional charm”

Endless solutions
To maintain continuity within the scheme, we designed and made an original Bakehouse dining table to work cohesively with the design of the kitchen and wider architecture. A powder-coated steel frame was colour-matched to the island, painted in Slate Grey, with the Italian Carrara marble top complementing the same worktop within the kitchen, featuring either side of the sink.
“We connected the outdoors with the indoors with bringing the colours and textures of woods and natural stones”
