BEHIND BAKEHOUSE
Founded in 2008, the team at Bakehouse have a unique understanding of the need for a kitchen that truly is the heart of your home. Our wealth of knowledge allows us to work seamlessly within any time-frame and create beautiful, accessible spaces with a high level of distinction and sophistication. We produce both traditional and contemporary kitchens with sublime architectural detail, sympathetic to the property and its surrounding.
The Bakehouse story
Our founder and creative director Alan Ramm has always had a passion for designing high-quality furniture using authentic and time-honoured techniques. Although the business began its life at the Old Bakehouse Kilns, part of a baker’s shop in the centre of the old wood merchant town of Stamford, the origin of our ethos goes back further. When renovating the first studio, Alan’s interest in design led him to discover remnants of Shaker furniture within the building and that, along with inspiration from the nearby grand Elizabethan estate of Burghley House built by William Cecil more than 500 years ago, created a desire to bring beautiful, handcrafted English kitchens to clients worldwide.
Celebrating the provenance and quality of luxury English design has been central to the Bakehouse mission from day one, always drawing on the traditional methods of joinery to create exceptional quality, long-lasting furniture with enduring style. Alan and the Bakehouse team aim to integrate traditional English carpentry methods into all bespoke projects to ensure a perfect balance between the old and new, shaping spaces that are expertly crafted to suit modern life. In 2015, the brand outgrew the original premises and relocated to the old haberdashery shop on Stamford’s St Mary’s Street, where the studio operates today.
Luxury English kitchen design
With strong heritage and a dedication to English design, we have an unrivalled drive for showcasing the very best of handcrafted luxury kitchens. By both looking to the past and striving to push forward with innovative solutions, our artisan approach makes each and every project we do unique, personal and highly considered to every last detail.
All of our furniture is made in England by a highly-skilled team who continually hone their craft to ensure we lead the way in celebrating what makes English luxury bespoke design so special. We then deliver this across the globe, taking high-quality design to an international audience.
Unsurpassed service
We are proud of our wealth of knowledge, superior craftsmanship and adaptable approach to each and every project, whether residential or commercial. We believe no two projects are the same as each must be specifically tailored to meet the needs of our discerning clients and the unique lifestyles that each of us lead. Our approach is personal, approachable and collaborative and we can be as hands-on or hands-off as you like, while always maintaining discreet and respectful relationships.
With painstaking consideration for every last detail – from measurements, proportions and colour coding to ensuring seamless blending with architectural features – we take the time to customise every space so it works harmoniously with setting and lifestyle. Alan Ramm
Creative Director
“The drive to be individual and to challenge the impossible to become possible is what keeps me and Bakehouse moving forward. I couldn’t possibly pick a favourite project, but one of my proudest achievements was being commissioned to build furniture and cabinetry for one of the most iconic buildings in Paris. I also love the gym – sadly as much as wine and beer – enjoy shooting, watersports and spending time at home with my family.”
Leonie Grewal
Design Consultant
“I’m ridiculously passionate about transforming interior spaces. There isn’t a lot I don’t get involved in at Bakehouse – from design and meeting clients to helping out the team – so means every day is different which I love. Other loves include good food, wine and company.”
Mark Porter
Senior Project Manager
“I’m a stickler for detail and I love being particular on every last part of a project to keep everything running smoothly and on time. Being organised is my job. Away from the studio, I play tennis and enjoy watching snooker.”
Gavin McMillan
Craftsman
“It’s often said, but truly the best part of my job is bringing clients’ dreams to reality. What starts as an idea and drawing, transforms into the real deal and the thrill of that never gets old. A fun fact about me: my son was born on my 24th birthday.”
Colin Edwards
Craftsman
“I have always loved working at Bakehouse and spending time creating amazing designs with my work mates. My favourite job is assembling the kitchens and then seeing very happy customers enjoy them. When not in the workshop, I love hiking.”
Janis Karlson
Craftsman
“I have the privilege of transforming plain surfaces into vibrant, eye-catching pieces through my artistic touch. Whether it’s custom cabinets, unique fixtures, or bespoke projects, my work brings life to everyday items by painting them with creative and technical skills I have learned over the years. My job feels like a hobby.”
Iryna Jordan
Design Consultant
"My passion for design lies in creating environments that resonate with our clients’ unique lifestyles. It’s all about crafting functional and serene living spaces that can be enjoyed for years to come. My other joy is rugby – I coach a junior team."
Rafael Pedro
Craftsman
“Woodturning is my passion and one of my best work moments was working on David Gandy’s kitchen and helping to create the Vogue Luxe collection. The best part of my job is always learning new things.”
Jaiden Lilly
Craftsmen Apprentice
“My best moment was making the first set of doors for our creative director Alan’s own home. I love to follow the process of initial design to final installation – it’s always so satisfying. Spending time on the water is my way to relax, so when not working, I love to wakeboard.”
Michael (Mikey) Falla
Craftsman
“Each furniture fit is a journey and that’s what keeps me on my toes and makes the job so interesting. Every project is unique and I enjoy finding out about the fascinating stories behind each one. You could say I’m a people person. When not in the workshop, you can find me in my VW T5 campervan and love going to festivals during the summer months.”
Gillian Harvey
Accounts
“I love working with numbers and have a keen eye for detail. The Bakehouse team is great fun to work with. Outside of spreadsheets and keeping the numbers in check, I love reading and walking.”
Dalia Nishimori
Head of US Business Development
Design and its seemingly infinite possibilities drive me to create living spaces tailored to its inhabitants. I immensely enjoy the interaction with our customers, builders and artisans to create these lifestyle environments. Working across the pond with my colleagues in the UK makes for exciting challenges in bringing Bakehouse to the US. In my spare time, I enjoy travel, hiking and beach days with my family.
